From Where I Am

The city of San Antonio has been a place of inspiration for me over the years. Whether traveling there for work or for ministry, I have had several great spiritual experiences visiting that great city.

On one such trip, I was inspired to begin writing the following song. It’s a song about faith and fear, hope and hesitation, love and longing. It’s a song about “where I was” at the time in my spiritual journey and how I hoped that I would continue to respond to the Holy Spirit working in my life. I longed to hear that “still, small voice” of God urging me forward, and make a conscious choice to follow wherever God is leading me; to experience Pentecost every day of my life.

From Where I Am

Words & Music by Dan Donnelly

I see glimpses of heaven, but still I fear
I know that you love me
But I resist when you draw near
It’s like I’m treading water in a stagnant place
Afraid to receive all the love
All the grace you want for me
You want for me

Some days you’re my King: my first and my last
But some days I feel lost
It’s like the love we’ve shared has passed
God, please don’t give up on me
Help me become what you want me to be
Open my eyes and help me to see
You’re everything
God, you are everything

And help me hear that still, small voice
That reminds me that you love me
And help me make a conscious choice
To let your love in

Reach down to me and take my hand
Help me to be a better man
And lead me to a place where love never ends
From where I am

There’s a chain ‘round my heart that won’t let you in
There’s a stain on my soul from self-centered sin
Lord, bust my heart wide-open
And let your saving grace rush in
Open my eyes, my ears and my heart, my everything
To your everything

And help me hear that still, small voice
That reminds me that you love me
And help me make a conscious choice
To let your love in
Reach down to me and take my hand
Help me fulfill my Father’s plan
And lead me to a place where love never ends
From where I am

Reach down, Lord and take my hand
Lead me, Lord, from where I am

‘Cause you’re my first, you are my last
You’re my present, you’re my past
You’re my future, you’re my King
You’re the God of everything
And I love you
And I need you
So lead me, Lord … from where I am
